How Technical SEO Actually Affects Your Rankings

Crawling is Google's bot visiting your pages to discover content. If Googlebot cannot reach a page -- because of robots.txt blocking, slow server responses, or broken redirect chains -- that page does not exist in Google's world.

Indexing is Google processing and storing your page content. Pages can be crawled but not indexed if Google detects thin content, duplicate content, or receives noindex directives. Your page literally vanishes from search results.

The compounding problem is that technical issues affect your entire site. A single content improvement helps one page. Fixing a site-wide technical issue improves every page simultaneously.

Core Web Vitals: The Performance Metrics Google Actually Uses

Core Web Vitals became a ranking factor in 2021 and their weight has increased every year since. These three metrics measure real user experience on your site.

Largest Contentful Paint (LCP)

LCP measures how long it takes for the largest visible element -- typically your hero image or main heading block -- to fully load. Google considers under 2.5 seconds "good." Between 2.5 and 4 seconds is "needs improvement." Over 4 seconds is "poor."

What kills LCP:

Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS)

CLS measures visual stability. When elements on your page move unexpectedly as the page loads -- text jumping down when an ad loads above it, buttons shifting when a font swaps in -- that is layout shift. Target: under 0.1.

What kills CLS:

  • Images without dimensions. If you do not specify width and height attributes on img tags, the browser does not know how much space to reserve until the image loads.
  • Dynamically injected content. Ad slots, cookie banners, and newsletter popups that push content down after initial render.
  • Web fonts. When a web font loads and replaces the fallback font, text reflows if the fonts have different metrics.

How to fix it:

  • Add width and height to every image and video element.
  • Reserve space for ad slots with min-height CSS.
  • Use font-display: optional for non-critical fonts to prevent layout shift entirely.
  • Load dynamic content (chat widgets, popups) in overlay layers rather than inserting them into the document flow.

Crawlability: Making Sure Google Can Find Your Pages

If Google cannot crawl your pages efficiently, nothing else matters. Here is how to audit and fix crawlability.

Robots.txt

Your robots.txt file lives at yourdomain.com/robots.txt and tells search engine bots which parts of your site to crawl and which to ignore.

Common robots.txt mistakes:

  • Accidentally blocking important directories. I have seen staging sites go live with Disallow: / still in robots.txt, which blocks the entire site. Check yours right now.
  • Blocking CSS and JavaScript files. Google needs to render your pages to evaluate them. Blocking assets prevents rendering and hurts indexing.
  • Not including your sitemap URL. Add Sitemap: https://yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml to the bottom of your robots.txt.

How to audit: Go to Google Search Console > Settings > robots.txt. Google shows you exactly what your current file says and when it last fetched it. Use the URL Inspection tool to test whether specific URLs are blocked.

XML Sitemaps

Your XML sitemap tells Google which pages exist and when they were last updated. It does not guarantee indexing, but it significantly improves crawl discovery for large or deep sites.

Sitemap best practices:

  • Include only canonical, indexable URLs. No redirects, no noindex pages, no paginated URLs that point to canonicals.

How to find them: Screaming Frog flags redirect chains and loops automatically during a crawl. Filter the Redirect Chains report and fix any chain with more than one hop by updating the first redirect to point directly to the final destination.

Indexing: Controlling What Google Stores

Getting pages crawled is step one. Getting them properly indexed is step two.

Index Coverage Report

Google Search Console's Pages report (formerly Index Coverage) is your dashboard for indexing health. It categorizes your URLs into:

  • Indexed: Pages in Google's index. This is what you want.
  • Not indexed: Pages Google found but chose not to index. The specific reason tells you what to fix.
  • Error: Pages with problems that prevent indexing.

Priority fixes by error type:

  • "Crawled - currently not indexed": Google saw the page but decided it was not worth indexing. Usually means thin content, duplicate content, or low quality signals. Improve the content or noindex the page if it is not valuable.
  • "Discovered - currently not indexed": Google knows the URL exists but has not crawled it yet. Usually a crawl budget issue. Improve internal linking to these pages and ensure your sitemap includes them.
  • "Duplicate without user-selected canonical": Google found multiple pages with similar content and is choosing the canonical for you. Set explicit canonical tags on the version you want indexed.
  • "Soft 404": The page returns a 200 status code but Google thinks it should be a 404 (empty pages, placeholder content). Either add real content or return a proper 404 status code.

Canonical Tags

Canonical tags tell Google which version of a page is the "master" copy when multiple URLs serve similar content. This is critical for ecommerce sites with filtered navigation, blogs with tag and category archives, and any site with URL parameters.

Implementation rules:

  • Every page should have a self-referencing canonical tag, even if no duplicates exist.
  • Canonical tags must use absolute URLs, not relative paths.
  • Canonical tags should point to the preferred URL format (with or without www, with or without trailing slash -- pick one and be consistent).
  • Do not canonical paginated pages (page 2, page 3) back to page 1. Each paginated page has unique content.

Noindex vs. Robots.txt

This distinction trips up many people. Robots.txt prevents crawling. Noindex prevents indexing. They serve different purposes and using the wrong one causes problems.

  • Use robots.txt to block entire sections you never want crawled: admin directories, staging environments, internal search result pages.
  • Use noindex for pages you want crawled (so Google follows links on them) but not indexed: tag pages, author archives, utility pages like login or thank you pages.
  • Never block a page with robots.txt AND noindex it. If robots.txt blocks crawling, Google never sees the noindex tag and may index the page anyway based on external links pointing to it.

Site Architecture: Structure for Humans and Search Engines

Your site architecture determines how link equity flows, how easily users find content, and how Google understands your topical authority.

Flat vs. Deep Architecture

A flat architecture keeps important pages close to the homepage (1-2 clicks). A deep architecture buries them (4+ clicks). For SEO, flatter is better -- with caveats.

The ideal structure for most sites:

  • Homepage links to 5-10 main category/pillar pages via navigation.

Monitor structured data in Google Search Console under Enhancements. Each schema type has its own report showing valid items, items with warnings, and items with errors.

Mobile-First Indexing: Your Mobile Site Is Your Site

Google has used mobile-first indexing since 2023. This means Google crawls and indexes the mobile version of your site, not the desktop version. If your mobile site is missing content, has different links, or performs poorly compared to desktop, your rankings suffer.

What to Check

  • Content parity. Every piece of text, image, and structured data on your desktop site must also exist on mobile. Use Google's URL Inspection tool and switch between desktop and mobile user agents to compare rendered output.
